Helmerich & Payne

Create a new vision for personalized work across the fleet

HP1

Overview

Helmerich & Payne is one of the biggest drilling companies in the United States. H&P has a unique drilling technology that enables the company to drill 365 days a year across hundreds of drilling rigs. To help the company work more efficiently across all drilling sites, H&P hoped to create a new mobile logistics platform that would make it easy for employees across roles to accomplish their duties and collaborate with others.

Variate worked closely with the H&P leadership team to plan the project and create a new design approach built around using in-going input from employees to drive innovation and guide critical decisions. Early on, we started an ongoing employee feedback program where we flew around the USA to drilling rigs every month. At the beginning of the project, we met with different employees to understand their needs and pain points and observe their behavior working on digital systems across the rig. We used these valuable insights to drive the initial design decisions and underlying functionality of the new software system. Every month, we would show the latest designs and software prototypes in the field to improve the product.

The new reimagined customer experience led to greater work efficiency, happier, more engaged employees, and more revenue.

3 Big Takeaways

  1. Co-creation with end-users is key to adoption
  2. Make your experience hyper-relevant to each employee
  3. Real problems get solved through workflows

1.

Co-creation with end-users is key to adoption

We started our project with employee interviews to understand how employees work and complete their daily tasks. Early in the project, Variate created a customer research process to guide design decisions throughout the project. Every month Variate traveled around the USA to meet with the drilling team to review the latest designs and gain more feedback to improve the design. After we created the initial product and launched with two pilots, we created an overall strategy for the company demonstrating how the new design system could scale to other user groups and systems company-wide.

2.

Make your experience hyper-relevant to each employee

Companies care about their employees and do their best to enable each employee to accomplish their daily tasks most efficiently. Upon login, the MyRig software knows the name and role of each employee and shows the most relevant information making it easy for each employee to perform their most important tasks. When on the rig, Employees can sign in and see the most critical tasks for the day. As each task is completed, the software showcases actions that make it easier to perform further tasks helping the team work more efficiently.

3.

Real problems get solved through workflows

One of the most significant pain points we uncovered through employee research was that it was complicated to complete tasks throughout the day utilizing over 20 third-party softwares. Each employee would view the maintenance schedule in one application, review the manuals for work in another application, order materials in another application, etc. Each experience was completely different, and the learning curve to perform work and the completion rate for work varied widely across the fleet. As part of the project, Variate designs a new user experience that connects applications across core workflows, dramatically cutting down workflows, and making it easier and more fun to complete work.
